I teach photography and Photoshop to both beginning students and those who have completed the basic course previously. Photography is an activity that is both artistic and technical, and one that most people have considerable familiarity with. In taking a course in photography, students will explore the potential to make photos more than documents reflecting people, places that already exist, or an event that occurred. Photography is a way to create meaning as well, or to concentrate meaning much the way a novelist does in telling a story. In the class, students will also learn camera and editing techniques that will enable them to illustrate the things they visualize. An important component of the class, in addition, is to learn to produce work on a schedule. Students will be given a photographic assignment, some techniques to achieve it, and a deadline to achieve it by. They will need to manage their time in order to get the assignments done by the deadline. I feel this principle is at least as important to practice as is the art and technique of the photography itself.
